Fusion Student Accommodation

Located in the centre of Sheffield and just a few minutes’ walk from both Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam Universities, the new Fusion student accommodation has been carefully planned to enable students to make the most of university life.

Delivered at a cost of £46.5 Million the scheme involved the construction of 4 blocks ranging in height from 6- storeys through to 17-storeys at the highest elevation, comprising 864 accommodation units.

In the communal areas, Senior’s thermally enhanced SF52 fully capped aluminium two-storey curtain walling was installed to give a sense of light and space, whilst perimeter capped silicone glazed SF52 was chosen for the glazed link bridge between accommodation blocks.

In addition, a total of 1150 energy efficient SPW600e open out casement windows were installed throughout the development, whilst robust SPW501 commercial doors, certified Secured By Design, were installed at all entrances for added safety and security.

With much of the development facing a noisy street and surrounded by busy shops, cafes, bars and restaurants, acoustics were a key part of the brief. In fact, the specification included the requirement for a sound reduction index (RW) rating of 43 for areas exposed to the most noise such as roadside areas and lower levels. This advanced acoustic performance was achieved by using acoustic energy efficient insulated glass units manufactured from a combination of 8.8mm acoustic laminates and 8mm toughened glass for the SPW600e windows. To keep costs down this was balanced with RW ratings of 32 and 38 for quieter areas of the buildings.

The high thermal and acoustic performance of both SF52 curtain walling and SPW600e windows also added to noise reduction as well as maintaining a comfortable environment whilst reducing energy usage.

Students can choose from 3 accommodation types: spacious 4 – 10-bed units with a shared kitchen and social space, cluster studios where each student has their own studio with a kitchenette and ensuite but can mingle in the shared communal space and kitchen, or self-contained studios with ensuite, kitchen and study area for those who want to live independently.

What turns this development into premium student accommodation is the host of high-end communal amenities including: a state-of-the-art sports centre with gym; yoga area and a half basketball court; indoor cinema; games and karaoke rooms; gaming den; communal lounge; indoor and outdoor study spaces; library; private dining area; rooftop terraces with outdoor kitchens; a garden cinema and attractive landscaped courtyard area with BBQs.

With unrivalled facilities, Fusion Student Accommodation is set to become a popular choice amongst the circa 60,000 students attending the two Sheffield universities.
