Located within the historic market town of Alnwick, in Northumberland, Willowburn Retail Park is a new shopping destination immediately accessible via the adjacent A1. Situated on the southern outskirts of the town near to the already established Willowburn centre, home to Sainbury’s, Argos, Homebase and Pets at Home stores, the new development is expected to draw visitors from far and wide.
Planning permission was given in June 2018 and work began on site in January 2019 with completion in time for pre-Christmas trading for new tenants.
The distinctive modern design uses a bold mixture of sustainable materials including energy efficient glazing plus sustainable timber Accoya for the cladding, soffit and eaves detail. Senior Architectural Systems provided the full glazing package which included thermally efficient SF52 curtain walling for the full-height glazed frontages and robust SPW501 doors, Certified to PAS24 and Secured by Design standards, to provide secure access throughout the development.
With a total of 37,405 sq.ft. of retail floorspace, plus onsite parking for some 200 vehicles, the new retail destination now offers a diverse mix of brand names and independent retailers including Marks & Spencer Food Hall, Starbucks and Turnbull’s Butchers & Deli which showcases local produce. Developers Northumberland Estates, one of the largest and most active developer landlords in the North East, expect the new Willowburn development to create new employment opportunities and have a positive effect on the local economy.
