Hugh Webster Place, Hull

Winner of the ‘Best Social Housing’ category at the South Yorkshire & Humberside Local Authority Building Control (LABC) Awards in 2019, Hugh Webster Place Housing Scheme is a vibrant new housing project of 41 contemporary dwellings in Hull.

As part of the regeneration of the city the housing scheme has been created by extensive redevelopment of the former head office building of social enterprise organisation The Goodwin Development Trust.

Designed by Hodson Architects with the needs of the local community in mind, Hugh Webster Place features bright and colourful cladding, with plenty of daylight throughout. This was achieved by installing Senior Architectural Systems’ thermally efficient, slim profile SPW600 aluminium windows and doors and SF52 aluminium curtain walling. In total 239 windows and 42 doors were fabricated and installed by Glass & Framing Solutions Ltd.

The stepped profile and positioning of the development, which increases from two to four storeys from the south to the north, also helps to ensure that each of the homes and gardens enjoys adequate levels of daylight.

The aim was to create affordable housing with a reduced energy footprint, so sustainability was a large consideration in the scheme’s design. Senior’s thermally-efficient aluminium windows and doors help to keep energy usage low whilst the development was created using off-site timber construction and features a shared courtyard for growing fruit and vegetables.
